DAY SIX: SABA RESTAURANT AND BARBICAN

DAY SIX and BLOGATHON is still going strong!

Last weekend, I had my first ever Arabian food experience. I am not a big fan nor somehow familiar with them. The last time I went to Stockholm, I missed out the frenzy and I remembered seeing a lot of kebab stores all around the corner of Stockholm. Yes, it was exquisitely tasty and superb, a new kind of experience for me because I have never seen one kebab store in my hometown Kota Kinabalu yet. I bet things may have changed all these years.

Good thing is, these come in a cheaper price tag than usual and it is not some fancy Arabian dishes or not - just a simple kebab and a refreshing frizzy drink to keep my stomach happy after a long day-out.

Saba-Restaurant was the place I visited that day. When you stop by at Setiawangsa LRT station - an easily accessible if you go by LRT train, cross the overhead bridge into a near fancy condominium of Seri Maya at Setiawangsa.

There are several Arabian restaurants but look for Saba Restaurant because it is much affordable and provides the same Arabian foods like others. Besides enjoying the typical Arabian food, you can also satisfy yourself with variety range of shisha.

Because it was my first ever visit, I asked dear Evelyn for any recommendation. Thus, she recommended me the Chicken Shawarma Kebab. This kebab is chicken-based and wrapped in a bread with salad and dressing. Though it is dry and lack in mayonnaise, it is still exquisitely delicious. The chicken is tender too and it costs around MYR 4 to MYR 5.

For the beverage, I chose Barbican. Barbican is not castle by the way, but it is a brand of a chilling frizzy sparkling juice from Arab. It is made of malt and should be considered akin any malta beer. (Malta is a young beer, carbonated and contains no-alcohol; generally deemed as beer that has not been fermented) They have different types of flavour; namely apple, raspberry, strawberry and lemon. My personal favourites are the apple and strawberry.

Okay, honestly!! Barbican is awesome!! Shall try if you found it anywhere and I was made to understand that it costs MYR 2.50 per bottle. Barbican is manufactured in Dubai by Aujan Industries Co.

THE DONALD DUCK RICE GATHERING....

Before you decide to keep on reading the post below, please be aware that the author does not responsible for any physical or mentality changes that you may experience after reading this post which may include saliva drooling, sudden duck craving or drum-rolling stomach.

WARNING!! JUICY AND DELICIOUS FOOD SHOWN IN THIS POST ARE TOTALLY NON-HALAL!!

We all love chicken rice, which is obvious almost everyone's favourite. But sometimes we need some changes and fresh air, right? So, how about Donald Duck rice?

No, not this famous Donald Duck. But this....

On Monday of this week, Jackie called for a gathering since Ying Zi will be around town. Those who attended this quak-quak gathering include Jackie, Ying Zi, me and Evelyn dear, while Victoria joined us as well later.

The duck rice that we had was Sun Ming Restaurant, located at Taman Connaught, Cheras. It is about 15 minutes drive from the city centre and this could be one of the best duck rice I ever had in years.

We have Google Map to show you the location...
(Click the picture to enlarge)

We ordered half-a-roasted-duck and a plate of RM 15 char-siew for the four of us.

More up-close of the roasted duck...

...and the char siew...

With Jackie been the photographer, you will only see three of us here only.

By the way, you want to hear to a joke? While waiting for our duck rice to come, I noticed that we have different type of beverages on the table. Then I started to say how our life is like 4 bottles of different drinks.

Here comes Green Tea's Theory of Bottle-drink with Human's Stage of Life.

WHEN YOU ARE BABY, you drink milk
WHEN YOU ARE TEENAGER, you drink Coke
WHEN YOU ARE ADULT, you drink beer
AND WHEN YOU ARE OLD, you drink chinese tea.

Guess who is drinking what on this picture? (JK)

BERNARD HAD PIZZA FROM PAPA JOHN

Christmas time is here again and too bad, we do not have any snow or cold weather to accompany it. What a day to be missed on the 25th of the last month of the year. I would say I had a little great time although this year's is not as merry as it used to be. Years ago, Christmas used to be fun as we always get presents from others. Nowadays, those traditions are not to be seen much anymore.

For the past three days, I have twice encounters with pizza. Both were from Papa John's at Berjaya Times Square. The first time I had it was on 23/12 with Renaye. I do not have any pictures for the food I ordered on that day but it was their signature pizza menu - Super Papa Pizza.

Today on the Christmas Day (25/12), again I have a pizza, but this time with my sister, since she paid. Papa John is no ordinary Pizza Hut or Domino's Pizza. Although the price may be a bit higher, but they do serve a better pizza than the two. Papa John's pizza seems to be more attractive, crunchy crust and more variety than Pizza Hut's. The crust is not as hard as rock as I used to have in Pizza Hut but rather it is crunchy. Pizza Hut's pizza goes well only with the munched Mozarella cheese but Papa John's can still be "edible" without the cheese. I do not why, but I can't really eat Pizza Hut's pizza without those extra cheese.

This was what my sister and I ordered. We ordered the same - Island & Sea Pizza, which of course it was a seafood pizza. The 6-inches original individual pizza costs only RM11.20. However, if you are a big-eater, the larger 9-inches may prove to be too expensive and extremely unworth with its price tag of RM 22.90 or something. I was surprised by the large price difference, for one is 6-inches while the other is 9-inches, both original flavour. My brother-in-law in a meantime, ordered a pasta - their signature Super Papa Pasta. He said it was nice!!

The Island & Sea Pizza is a pizza with seafoods (prawn and crab meat), chicken roll and other. It comes in 4 slices for 6-inches size. They do not have individual meal, although they have meals for two, four and six.

For the drink, Ice Cream Vanilla Float - RM 5. This drink needs no introduction for it anyway. It is just a normal ice float, so nothing to be grand about it.

So, another dinner meal worth less than RM18 at Berjaya Times Square!! It costs RM 17.80 after tax.

Papa Johns is a pizzaria in Berjaya Times Square, the one of two available here. The other is the newly opened Vivo, which is at the Lower Ground level. Papa John can be reached at the Ground Floor, near the entrance and next to the Dome Restaurant. Wifi is not yet available.

Anyway, since Christmas lasts for 12 days...
MERRY CHRISTMAS
Feliz Navidad!!

BERNARD HAD GOOD FOOD OUTING AT PAVILION

Note: I still haven't get any photos from Ah Jess yet regarding the Thursday's outing with Jess and Sharlynn. That day was fun, especially with the "POM POM SHAKALAKALAKA POM" dance. So I just leave it another day for that....(Skip)

Anyway, this is an update from Friday's outing for food searching around Pavilion. It was a shot-gun outing gathering made by Jacquelyn. She called for a gathering on Innit CBOX at 1am!! Well, since only me been available at that time with some possibility that Wilson will be joining us as well, thus we set the time and venue for Friday 2pm at Pavilion KL. Met Jac in front of the newly opened Emperor Q restaurant. The prices looked expensive, so we passed out the idea of trying the food there.

(Reminder: Well, for those who had never step their feet to Pavilion, the floor arrangement is a bit weird. The ground floor is labelled as 3rd Floor, while 1st Floor is actually the underground level or Lower Ground)

Okay, she will be my partner for food searching for the day....

For starter, the lunch was at Pancake House International. Contrary to popular believe that it only serves pancakes, it is not the case for it. They do offer lunch sets of variety foods and styles all at reasonably price of around RM 13.50 to RM15, complete with a package that also include drinks. Visit their website if you wish for at here. We ordered different menu for ourselves.

This is mine, House Speciality Set...RM 15...
It contains a crunchy fried chicken, mince-meat pasta, a slice of bread, a raw vegetable-popiah like pita bread, mushroom sauce gravy and a glass of root beer.

This is Jac's, Pan Chicken Special Set...RM 15...
It contains two crunchy fried chicken, tuna macaroni salad, toast and butter, mushroom sauce gravy and a glass of root beer.

RM 15 meal with drinks are something you will considered cheap for a place in Pavilion to have. I enjoyed the meal although I would love if they improved on the fried chicken. Jac speculated that they might be using normal flour for the chicken, which I kind of agreed. On the other hand, the mushroom sauce gravy seems to be addictive. Although a bit salty, I didn't see any leftover of that sauce...simply delicious.

Pancake House International is situated at Level 1, Pavilion...unit 1.10 (look at the map)

Next, we headed to Bernard's FAVOURITE DESSERT HOUSE/RESTAURANT...
MOF@Japanese Sweet and Coffee
Remember the post back in November? Yes, here am I revisiting it again and it would be Jac's first time at MOF.

This is Jac's, Shiratama Zenzai with Almond Flakes...RM 9
It is a Japanese custom-made red bean paste with dumplings and almond nut flakes on top. It looks nice and the combination seems to be working well. I like the crunchy almond flakes because I stole Jac's one scoop and I loved it, "felt like in Heaven"

This is mine, all time favourite together with Macha Kakigori; Kinako Kakigori...RM 11
It is a Japanese version of Ais Kacang...crushed ice with topping of red bean paste and soy bean powder, with maple syrup as well for sweetener.

This picture is somehow very tempting. I want some too please!!!
MOF@Japanese Sweet and Coffee is located at Level 1, Pavilion KL at unit lot 1.02 (look at the map)

Nice food in Pavilion, yes, all you can find it at the price tag of less than RM 50 for two pax in total. That's roughly RM 25 for a main course meal and a heavy dessert. Before we left Pavilion, a camwhore session with Jac.

Thanks Jac for the good company.
Love to have you for another "date" LOL
The same and almost similar post is available here as well....

I LOVE MOF, Help!!!

STARBUCKS KEEP ON REMINDING ME THAT CHRISTMAS IS COMING

It's still November and there are roughly 6 weeks before that day of the year again when the Christmas Day is going to be celebrated by all of us. Either Christmas serves as a celebration of religiously to accept the birth of Jesus or merely a festival of winter and family gathering, the Christmas is always been an unique celebration of joy and happiness. Recently, the mood for Christmas is back again and as usual is early than what you may have thought. The best thing is that those feel good mood for Christmas and the year ending cheer mood will never be the same if....

Starbucks....

do not introduce something new into their menu list!!

In conjunction with the Christmas celebration, Starbucks have come out with three new drinks to blend the holiday season.

First in the list is Toffee Nut Frappuccino. Toffee is confection made by boiling molasses or sugar along with butter and flour, and always been, as in this case mixed with nuts or raisins. Toffee Nut is an exquisite drink but I find it quite mediocre, so-so and another variation of normal frappuccino with whipped cream on top but been added an extra toffee and nuts on it. I won't say it is disappointing but it sure good to have it while your Christmas mood is swinging in. Aroma is well balanced, the taste is bold and lingers.

The second on the list is the sister of Frappuccino - Toffee Nut Latte. I haven't quite tasted it yet but I can say this - imagine milk coffee with the toffees. Hmmm...I'm imaginating it right now.

The last on the list which I think it should be a popular beverage at the moment is the Dark Cherry Mocha Frappuccino. I remembered last time when they had this Dark Mocha Frapp, which kind of bolder and darker version of Mocha Frapp. It was good but some may find the boldness of chocolate compound was way too heavy. This one will be my next on list of to try stuff and it should be bold but smooth in flavour upon my expectation.

Also, besides the three concurrent beverage of the season, Starbucks is also selling the new coffee bean (not really new, but is a kind of tradition every year) - The Starbucks Christmas Blend. Of what I can remember, this special beans come only around this year. Those beans are gathered from all regions - which make it a mixed or multi-regional coffee beans that have been stored for years.

Well, too bad my Starbucks Passport. Due to my busy and hectic schedule, I barely tried anything new over the past two months. Maybe after the exam or so!! Talking about Christmas beevrage, I just remembered - what happened to the last year's Proline Frappuccino? It was good I remembered.

Well, try the new beverage at the nearest Starbucks Coffee...the ebeverage should be in until January next year before Chinese New Year kicks in.

BERNARD HAD ICE-CREAM FROM M.O.F.

Okay, this is KY style isn't it? KY loves food so much that he can basically blog everything about food. So here is my try, I repeat, my try to blog about food. May be not going to be as good as KY!! (**NOTE: I don't have any camera to capture the picture, simply using my laptop webcam sure do)

Anyway, Sunday - the day after the Nokia Nuffnang Halloween Silent Party...yes it was a rocking and awesome nevertheless. However, I still yet to prepare a proper blog on post-event yet. Not now but it will be soon!!

Anyway, I love that Nokia Thumbdrive that I got during the party. Although people claimed it looks like wristband, and how people insisted that it was a wrist band; this is how I satisfy those people...Yeah, it's a wrist band LOL!!

So the Sunday afternoon, while I was at INNIT C-BOX as usual for meeting nice people from INNIT, I suddenly thought of ice-cream! Not the normal Cornetto or Walls but the one that ones can only find in Pavillion. So I went out to Pavillion that afternoon for the mission to search for the ice-cream, to satisfy my craving for some...*coughing* Japanese Ice-Cream.

So the mission started at Ministry of Food (MOF) where I was made to know that they served very nice Japanese ice-cream. MOF@ Japanese Sweet and Coffee is the place to be if you want to quench and satisfy your throat with some awesome Japanese beverage and desserts. MOF is located at the first floor level of Pavillion KL, opposite the Mercato supermarket, next to JCo Doughnut shop and Food Republic food court. I bet not many people knew much about it, but the shop was full house that day.

So, the ice-cream that I tried, it's called Kakigori. Well, Japanese food lover will assure you that it is the Japanese version of Ais Kacang, but MOF's Kakigori is so different. It is actually a ice-crush ala Ais Kacang ABC. The ice-crush is topped with Hokkaido Gelato Soya Ice-Cream, some red bean paste made according to traditional Japanese way and some caramel sauce.

What best is that it contains no additional preservative, colouring or flavour. The gelato ice-cream is from Hokkaido origin and slurrpy nice and smooth, just like those from Italy. Well, extra sauce of topping made from some maple syrup can be poured to give more natural flavour and increase its sweetness.

But, I have one complaint - why was it so sweet? I was attracted by the instruction given that you will enjoy more with pouring that sauce on it. Anyway, I still love it and just be bear in mind that I will not pour that topping sauce again. Haha, RM11 Japanese dessert, relatively cheap and soothingly delicious. It worth the money and it really made me felt bloated.

Wanna try? Just go down to Pavillion now and enjoy. Kakigori dishes are available as in Mango, Green Tea, Strawberry and Chocolate flavours as well!!

Beverage Facts, Coffee O Coffee...Am I Addicted?

Everyday millions of people are enjoying a cup of brewed coffee worldwide. What is so great about coffee? I wonder how it makes coffee one of the most popular drink in the world. It derived from of course, a coffee bean from the coffee plant. Unlike the popular belief that coffee originated from Brazil or other South American countries (just because Brazil is the largest producer doesn't mean that it is the origin birthplace of it), it was actually originated from Ethiopia (ring any bell?) Then it spread all over the world to eventually become one of the most famous beverage in the world. They come in many genus but the robusta and arabica are most famous.
Once grinded, roasted and prepared, coffee can turn into many presentation of forms and beverage. Brewed coffee may comes from simply 3-in-1 of your Nescafe, or something like a coffee maker or from a vending machine.
THE VARIETY OF COFFEES
Drip brewed coffee made directly from a coffee bean (grounded) mixed with hot water in a pot. Or else you can have percolated coffee or French-pressed coffee which similarly made to drip type using a percolator pot or French-press pot. These three types of coffee can be served hot or cold (as iced coffee), with or without additives (sugar, milk or cream). Commonly they are called black coffee, been the normal coffee we always drink.
French press pot
Percolator pot

Espresso is a special concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing very hot water under high pressure through coffee that has been ground to a consistency between extremely fine and powder, originated from Milan, Italy and produced at 0.8 to 1.8MPa of pressure. This resembles cooking a coffee bean in water at high temperature and high pressure - pressurized cooking!! It has a thicker consistency than drip coffee and higher amount of dissolved solids than drip coffee per relative volume, therfore forms a very concentrated coffee base. In Starbucks or Coffee Bean, espresso is measured in a unit called shots. One shot equivalent to 30ml or 1 ounce fluid of espresso base. Caffe Americano is the most basic form with two shots and hot water in a ratio of 1:1 where hot water is added to the espresso. Long black is the same but reverse as espresso is added into hot water. Due to its concentration, espresso spawns into many other coffee drinks as it is used as a base for them.

Double shot of espresso

1) Latte or caffe latte (milk coffee) of Italian origin, is a coffee drink made with hot milk, where a steamed milk becomes its primary ingredient. The Italian brewed the coffee on a Moka, then poured the coffee into a cup of heated milk. Elsewhere, latte is prepared by mixing 1/3 espresso and 2/3 steamed milk and a layer of foamed milk on top. Other countries called it in a different name. Cafe au lait (France), Cafe con lache (Spain), Cafe com leite (Portugal), Flat White (Australia and New Zealand) and Kawa biala (Poland) - but there are more or lest the same.

Moka pot

Latte

2) Cappuccino is another similar Italian origin of mixture of espresso, hot milk and foamed milk as latte but have lesser steamed milk than latte. It usually served on a porcelain cup because it retains heat while the foam also acts to keep the coffee hot for a longer period. While heating the milk, microfoam is introduced by "pumping" tiny air bubbles into the milk, producing greater foam and sweetness. The amount of milk added can be altered with more milk will produce lighter cappucino. Therefore, it is simplify that Cappuccino comprised of 1/3 of espresso, steamed milk and microfoam in it. Cappuccino is dubbed as the most difficult espresso-beverage to be properly made but also considered to be the most artistic of all.

Cappuccino

3) Macchiato literally means marked or stained. Espresso or caffee macchiato is another form of Italian beverage where it uses one shot of espresso, and the small amount of added milk was the "stain." However, later the "stain" came to refer to the foamed milk that was put on top to indicate the beverage has a little milk in it (usually about a teaspoon). Conversely, latte macchiato is the other form where it refers to the method of preparation, wherein the steamed "pure" white milk gets "stained" by the addition of espresso. It differs significantly from cafè latte in that only ½ (or less) of an espresso shot is being used.

4) Mocha or cafe mocha is like a latte (a variant), having 1/3 espresso and 2/3 steamed milk like a latte, but a portion of chocolate syrup is added to it. It doesn't have milk foam on top of it, but instead cinnamon, cocoa powder or whipped cream are added to it.

Mocha

5) Caffe corretto - an Italian coffee consists of a shot of espresso been corrected with liquor (usually brandy, grappa, or sambuca). In Spain, it is called carajillo. Other forms of liquor coffee may also include Irish Coffee (with Irish whiskey), Bailey's Coffee (with Irish Bailey cream), Jamaican Coffee (with rum) and others.

Irish coffee where shots of espresso added with Irish whiskey.
6) Cortado - a popular coffee in Spain, Portugal and South America resembling Italian caffe macchiato. Unlike the Italian, the cortado should always be served in a 150–200 ml (5–7 fl oz) glass and the milk should only be steamed; maybe a little foam settles to the top but the essence of the drink must be steamed milk. Milk to coffee ratio is 1:1 to 1:2.

7) Frappuccino is a trademark drink by Starbuck only, a term that forms from a blend of Greek frappe (milkshake) and cappuccino, the coffee drink with a milky topping. A whole list of available frappuccino is on this link.

8) Affogato - an Italian coffee-based dessert, where caramel sauce, chocolate or gelato (Italian ice creams) can be incorporated into a shot of espresso.
Wow, a full detailed on COFFEE!! Am I addicted to COFFEE?? Anyway, I just have a breakfast set in The Coffee Bean, the one I ordered was "Food For Thought" with a brewed coffee. Love it. That seems to inspire me to suddenly talk about other types of coffee. Hope you enjoy it.
