R.I.P. NEIL ARMSTRONG

Former astronaut and more famously known as the first man ever in the history to step on the soil of the moon, Neil Armstrong will forever be a figure icon that leaves a huge impact on the aerospace exploration. It comes to my attention that Armstrong has passed away at the age of 82. According to the news report, "Armstrong underwent a heart-bypass surgery earlier this month, just two days after his birthday on August 5, to relieve blocked coronary arteries."

In 1969, Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 mission along side Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, in an expedition to the moon. Armstrong created history by becoming the first human being ever to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. A man known for his work ethic, spirit and devotion, remarked one of the most popular quote ever - "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" right after setting his foot on the dusty rock of the earth's very own and only satellite.

Following his retirement, Armstrong has lived silently in Ohio with his wife, Carol Held Knight. Armstrong had three children with his first wife, Janet Shearon. He is survived by his two sons, Eric and Mark. His daughter, Karen, died of pneumonia in 1962.

My deepest condolences go out to his family members and friends.

iPAD, WePAD, EveryonePAD....PART ONE

Apple, Inc. It is not just about an iMAC, iPHONE, iPOD or iPAD. It is a household brand name that boast the creativeness, drained exactly from the brain of Steve Jobs himself. For me, there are so much to love and to hate about their products. Neverthless in most cases, I have to agree that Apple products has been served as a tester for the customers' taste for current techs; always a step ahead from the others in terms of products placement. They set the early pace for others to follow. Technology is started by them and then improved by others. Is that what it is about Apple? Maybe, look at iPhone for instance. iPhone keeps getting better and better, while other products are catching up too.

iPAD - WHAT IS THIS SHIT?

Here is something I feel that it is no longer something like an iPOD or iPHONE. I was very convinced that this product is even crappier than when iPHONE was first rolled out (although in latter days, I find iPHONE really awesome in some angles). The name itself isn't that pleasant at all, discrimination against the women and it reminds me of tampon and sanitary pad. Why can't they named it iTablet in the first place? It looks like Steve Jobs has no other suitable name for this pad after all.

Anyway, criticism has been lauded on my previous post about it (Click here and read it - that even Hitler can't stand it!). iPad creates even more questions than a better solution for their own problems! iPad will remain as a personal device that works on no multitasking, no camera and everything of the usual Apple's absentees. Although initial reaction has been poor, the users are now getting used to it. Some quarters have expressed their satisfactory for iPad but I'm going to stick to my own opinion that iPad is still SUCKS and CRAPPY. Like I mentioned in my the previous article, iPad reserved only to those who have been fond with Apple's products. iPad can be a success but it will be largely based on the Apple's brand name.

WAIT, iPAD HAS COMPETITORS?

Yes indeed. While iPad began its sales a fortnight ago in Apple-land with sales been deemed underperformed (only 300,000 on Day One after months of pre-sales), Germany's Neofonie launched in what they called an "iPad killer". Rumours have been circling around that the so-called iPad killer or WePAD as some of you may have heard it, as a publicity stunt and hoax. The hoax appeared after many complaint that Neofonie did not showcased a proper prototype of WePad, while the one shown by its CEO Hoffer von Ankershoffen seems to be running on Windows 7. Hoax or not, later it was believed to be something promising. We will have more details when WePad will be officially introduced on April 26.

Then we have some Indian company known as Notion Ink, unveiling their slate tablet PC-like device - Adam. What's unique about this device is that is runs on a Pixel Qi screen display, the one that uses low power to operate. Like WePAD, Adam also runs on the Android OS (WePAD is more of a Linux + Android) and available in a much better processor than iPad.

Technically speaking, Apple iPad's launching has now officially set a war - the war of tablet PC worldwide. In Part Two of my report, we shall look at another 10 upcoming tablet alternative to your much mixed Apple iPad!!

GREEN TEA BERN SUPPORTS EARTH HOUR

Earth Hour 2010, an awareness program to cultivate the cultures and lifestyles that will contribute to climate changes.

Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. Earth hour was conceived by WWF and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. Earth Hour 2010 will take place on March 27, 2010 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., local time.

Therefore, to attribute my support for Earth Hour 2010, GreenTeaWorld decided to:

1. Switch off any lights and non-essential electrical appliances (except refrigerator)
2. Will not sign into Twitter, MSN and Facebook (No internet for the period of time)
3. Will not using any vehicle (if I'm going out for dinner later)
4. Will not be updating any blog posts
5. Will not using mobile phones to text (save battery)

So, that is what I'm going to do later at 8.30pm.

WHY I LIKE IT LONGER?

Long is a common English word. It's a word that is so common that it can be used for almost everything in the broad spectrum scope of time, distance, experience, emotion and more. Nevertheless, long can be both inspirational, controversial or exploratory in nature.

More recently, the word long has been extended to include one that redefines the glossy, sleeky and thin appearance of the world we lived in. A new experience of passion and love or simply an expression that requires only four letters to convey? I do not care how the borders of imaginary are breached, but I do only care WHY I LIKE IT LONGER. I LIKE IT LONGER in everything and whatever I do and I have.

SO, NOW YOU ASK WHY I LIKE IT LONGER?

(1) I can spend more time with the Slumber-land

A day of our human life existed in a form of fixed duration and moments. One day will always be 24 hours, nothing more and nothing less. But is it possible if we can stretch the time to become longer? Not really.

Why would I like it longer? The reason is simple, if only the time can be adjusted to accommodate one's desires, will anyone rants about having not enough time in their life?

I think I seriously need one because I do not think I had enough sleep these days and I need an extra couple of hours to get me back into the move.

(2) I can do my stuffs more without any worry of going flat

Battery is the source of power but it has a limited time of how long it can be consumed. My laptop can only goes and runs for 2 hours and after that, it goes flat. But is it possible to have the battery life longer? Yes.

Why would I like it longer? Besides the fact that I can do more works without ever worried to find a power point in the middle of nowhere, longer battery life also means less dependable to electricity.

A backup power can save few ringgits from my sky-rocketing power utility bills. Besides, should not we move ahead for greener life?

What is the web browser you are using when you are surfing the net? Is it the ever ancient Internet Explorer? Is it the "always-crash" Mozilla Firefox? Is it the Apple's Safari? Or Opera? Or perhaps it is the latest internet revolution Google Chrome that you are using?


Anyway, I'm using Google Chrome and so far it works awesome for me. Recently, Google Chrome has updated its version into v4.0. However, news about its latest upgrade to v5.0 is already on the move; at least that is what been reported, according to this source. With each version of Google Chrome, the using experience becomes better and better. The latest fourth version supports extension, something almost similar to Mozilla Firefox. In fact, the extensions has bringing in some cheer for internet browsing.

Over the weekend with the hypes of iPad has been buzzing around the ears of the people who are eager to know what it is has finally materialize. I do not really like the name even because iPad is always sounds like a sanitary napkin or women's towel. I thought Apple should have retained the rumoured names like iTablet or iSlate instead. With that, expect Apple to come out with iTampon soon.

GOOGLE NEXUS ONE OR APPLE iPHONE?

January 5, 2010. Google finally unveiled their much long-awaited smartphone to the world. The device, Nexus One, is manufactured by HTC and uses Google’s own mobile operating system, Android. With the new smartphones by Google, questions begin to arise whether this is the next alternative for Apple’s darling, iPhone. So, how both phones fared when the two were compared from all aspects?

WHAT GOOGLE IS NOT ALWAYS APPLE!!

This is a tough question to answer. First of all, I would like to remind you that both phones cater a different segment of users. iPhone is Apple and Nexus One is Google. So, in short, if you are those who are familiar with Safari, iTune, iPod or Aperture; iPhone could be the one you should use. Otherwise, take Nexus One if you are more keen towards Picasa, Android, Gmail and other Google applications. For that, they actually caters different segment users based on their preferences over Apple or Google’s applications.

WHAT SO DIFFERENT BETWEEN THEM?

Secondly, spend a few moment to look at the comparison table in terms of phone specifications between Nexus One and iPhone 3GS below. The table was taken and modified from billshrink(dot)com.

To be frank with you, I do not see much different between iPhone 3GS and Google Nexus One. On paper, the spectrum differs not much to each others while even Google Nexus One is only cheap by merely few tens of dollar from iPhone 3GS.

TITANIC, MOTHER NATURE AND GLOBAL WARMING

Last night (Saturday night), I watched Titanic on TV2. Not that I have never watched it before but I do not remembered when the last time I watched that movie on TV was. One thing for sure, it is one of the costliest movie has ever made and in Hollywood, only man like James Cameron know how to spend US$ 300 million budget wisely. Titanic made it into the top on the most grossed film in the movie history. More than US$ 1.8 billion was made worldwide just when we considered the number from cinemas; other forms of revenue were not calculated in.

Titanic is not only an honour for its cinematically achievement; raking so much money from the box-office counter and won an unprecedented 11 Academy Awards (Oscars) back in 1998, but Titanic is a constant reminder for human kind of the misfortunate event that went unfold in 1912 where no one can rise above the mother nature. Titanic was the largest cruiser ship ever built by mankind (up to that point) and was the fastest that time as well. But no one has ever gave an odd that the ship will sink on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean 97 years ago.

Human and Mother Nature has co-existed for very long now. We live together in the world we all known as Earth but there are times when we human wanted to rise above Mother Nature but we ended up whiplashed on our back due to our arrogance. We built the largest iron ship ever and decided to put in the ego in it. How proud are human with it back then? There are stories that Titanic was trying hard to make a cruising record to cross Atlantic Ocean in the fastest time. However, at one point of the journey, Titanic hit the iceberg and sank couple of hours later into the deep ocean, bringing to an end for about 1,500 souls to the bottom of the ocean. Roughly, 700 survived mostly the upper class passengers who have enough money to pay to escape their death.

Titanic is also a movie filled with emotional displays of love and human compassion. In the movie we were served with the romantic story between Jack and Rose, played by the ever now popular Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett. Of course, the story of between the two souls may not be true but nevertheless, it was one fine movie to watch. It was unimaginable how the little sparkle of love can unite peoples from different backgrounds to come together as one. Nevertheless, Titanic remained to be one of the greatest film ever, the greatest romantic movie ever and the greatest epic story ever.

Titanic is a perfect example on how human was banished badly by the Mother Nature. But what worries me the most is that the constant arrogance by human may bring us closer to the doom. Global warming is a global issue that has great impacts for the future that nevertheless can be very terrifying. Climate changes over the last millennia due to heightening of industrial revolution have created tones and tones of green house gases that cause the world temperature to rise. Are we courteous for the changes? Or we merely do not care at all about the effects?

Human survivor is not merely to protect the environment but depends on it. If the whole environment system failed, who are we after that? The recent failure for the world to unite to form a new pact of agreements to tackle the universal problem is something to be noted for. The failure of United Nations sponsored summit for climate change in Copenhagen recently is devastating. No official accord agreement and mutual understanding formed, leading the world to no where but a roadblock.

Remember, it was not easy and it will never be easy for human to try to step ahead of the Mother Nature. Once the balance is disrupted, the aftermath is catastrophic. Mother Nature will punish. Titanic sailed to show the man’s greatness and attempt to rule the ocean but the unsinkable ship sank eventually. That’s why we shall not play against the Mother Nature. The same goes to climate changes. The consequences may far more deadly than ever.

Mother Nature does not speak or tell you that she is hurt, instead she gives you those signs and symptoms you can obviously see. She is dying and yet the more we try to challenge her superiority, the more aftermath and unwanted consequences on the mankind. After all, the mankind will falls too when the Mother Nature falls.

MALAYSIA INTERNET SLOW LIKE HELL!!

The internet connection is a holy grail when we are talking about how fast the connectivity and surfing experience is. What is the use when you have an internet router service but you find it so frustrating when the speed you pay for is not even match in what you were told. 2Mbps as promised by the provider turned out in real life is only 2kbps. Frustrating? Yes indeed.

The faster the connection is, the more enjoyment in surfing the world wide web is, or the faster files travel across the user and recipients, or even the faster a file is downloaded. Well at least that is the stuffs we ever keep imagining that someday that will happen. In Malaysia however, we rarely enjoy a real "fast" internet connection. Call us the first world country with third world mentality and facilities.

Of course nevertheless, we have so much failed advertisements around us. Heartache but true, a slow internet connection can make a country less attractive. Foreign investors knew how dreadful our internet line is till they made this comment.

Regardless which site you are choosing, the losers are still you and the winners are still them. Why we are still listening to their crap when in the end of the day, they don't give you what they promised?

P1 Wimax has a higher speed than Streamyx but the connection is really unstable, so people said. Test running on P1 (I am writing this post while surfing Facebook, Tweet Deck and watching Zombieland online), I have to say that this is fairly stable. Probably P1 trying to lure me in by giving me a stable line. However according to the owner of the P1 set, things can be pretty ugly as well on time. The red lights on one of the LED indicator can be very annoying. When it is red, it is disconnected. Say I am lucky or what!? As far as I can see, the lights are still blipping blue.

TM Net unveiled their so called fastest ever, most coverage and most stable. Streamyx of course is nothing but a slow-speed yet fairly stable internet connection at least what people said. Test running on TM Net, I have to say it is as bad as you can imagine off. The line is actually fluctuate; in terms of speed or stability. When you download, it can get very frustrating because the ETA timer says 99 hours to go. The worst, the so called fast connection becomes slow due to bandwidth. In the end, you got no value.

In the nutshell, P1 Wimax may still have the edge over TM Net Streamyx. Claimed the fastest or what ever to poison our mind. The facts will remain the facts. When you have both, you do not actually have much choices to choose for.

According to the international web server testing site, SpeedTest.net placed Malaysia pathetically at number 87 for its download speed and disastrous number 79 in upload speed.

South Korea has the highest download speed in the world with 22.59 Mbps (average value of course), while Malaysia only has 1/11 of their speed. If downloading a movie file with 120 kbps is consider fast for us, try times 11 of that - 1.32 Mbps.

So, when they announced that the lucky Malaysian will get a "true" high speed broadband connection in the next 7 years, which will be monopoly by TM Net, you know they are just a bunch of cuckoos and greedy people.

Too bad that we as the Malaysian consumer can't have their complaint getting fixed. The reason when you dialed 100 and no one really cares about your complaints is relatively understandable. Who cares about you when they have already monopoly everything.

DSLR HERE AND THERE

When it comes to taking pictures, we all know how it will be very handful to have a camera with you. With these cameras, we not only be able to take pictures for capturing those cherish and savour moments with family and friends but also a competition to see who has the best!!??

Okay, I may sound understatement here but I cannot hide myself from how much I'm beginning to hate a certain camera model (not user, just their camera). I may not be so knowledgeable when talking about the art of photography and camera technology.

Yes, DSLR. The bulky junky camera you can so-afford to own. Because I'm so noob about camera, I went to wikipedia to check the thing out. In the end, I can not understand a single word.

As I mention earlier, I am so annoyed with this particular camera model. Seriously!! People can not stop talking about it (I'm fine) but when they start to click those buttons on that huge gigantic camera, I sometimes get annoyed.

It happened recently when we decided to take a group-picture from a gathering. It was supposed to be a normal group photos but the DSLR cameras made my life difficult only. Imagine how much time you need to take a group photo? 2 minutes max!! With DSLR, you need about 5 to 10 minutes to take a picture.

The reasons are obvious. TESTING. ADJUST FREAKING SETTINGS. TAKE SEVERAL AND CHOOSE THE BEST. But the other not many notice is SHOWING OFF. The author of this blog is not rich, so please stop showing off your richness in front of me. Even if this camera drop in front of me or just that some one give it to me, I WILL SELL IT!!

DSLR is a professional type of camera, designed only for professional use, for the work of a professional only. After some inner though discussion with some new business buddies, whom none of them owned DSLR, I was amazed by another fact that seems to point DSLR into some sort of disadvantages as well.

Although DSLR is highly recommendable for photo shooting of scenery, human and object models and so on, DSLR pictures are not so recommended for moving objects, blogs and websites. DSLR pictures tend to gallop about 3MB in size and further editing and photoshopping are mantadory to reduce the size to around 100kB minimum to 1MB in most cases which is still a big size to consider. Even if you go and plagiarise from websites by taking pictures via "Save Image As", you still get good pictures at a lower size.

Photos at this big size when uploaded into the Blogger will consuming much of your space and will easily used up the limit of 1GB size. You may argue the use of external photo gallery such as Photobucket or Flixter, however. Do rememeber that the loading time will become extremely long and most reader will decided to read on without even viewing your half loading pictures. Internet in Malaysia is not as fast as those in Japan.

After all, a photo from a normal camera or from DSLR are still pictures. Yes, I admit that the photos from DSLR has a better and superior quality compared to the rest. In the end of the day, these are still photos. On my opinion, I still think that with proper lighting and background, a film-reel camera can produce a good quality of picture as well. With the price tag of 6K and for a brand name of superiority, DSLR serves not as a hobby item and it simply over-priced. DSLR should be reserved in the hands of the professional photographer. Because you own a DSLR, does not mean you are a professional photographer.

Google Chrome OS runs entirely on a OS version based on Linux and the Chrome browser. It looks stylish and it is not previewed in a beta version or what so ever. However, the revelation may not bring smiles in many eager fans. Google Chrome OS is web-based and runs in the Chrome browser - from its USB drive content to the Google Docs document.

The upper-left corner has an applications menu with links to a variety of Web applications. Those applications can be permanently lodged as narrow tabs between that menu and ordinary browser tabs.

One in Google side even went as far to say, "If you're a lawyer, editing contracts back and forth, this will not be the right machine for you." Simply it means that this OS will only be cool for those who primarily use the Web. The down side is been it needs you to hook up to the line so that the entire applications in it can be run.

However, the experience of using these applications when you are wired is truly similar like when you are surfing the web on Google Chrome. Web apps can be launched from its apps panel and hooks you up to Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, Google Wave and Youtube in an instant. Background apps like Google Talk is kept minimal to the docking panel.

Local storage is used as a reservoir to speed the system up when accessing these apps. Google is very keen to have Flash incorporated, thus the Adobe Flash will enhance the browsing experience on Google Chrome OS.

The problem is still this - do not expect Google Chrome to be functioning on every CPUs. For the moment, it won't work with your standard hard drives, just (Solid-State drives) SSDs. Google is trying to work the wire on for x86 and ARM CPUs. Companies developing hardware for the operating system include Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Adobe, Asus, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Freescale and Intel. Therefore, Google Chrome OS works ideally with lower end PCs called Netbook.

Until today, Google Chrome OS is still an open source OS designed to work exclusively with web applications. If you are interested to get one, you have to wait till the second half of the year 2010 before a stable version will be available.

Chrome OS, like Chrome, devotes almost all its real estate to the contents of the browser window. That leaves maximum room for Web applications such as Google's search site.

Chrome OS communicates with a variety of panels. This shows a number of instant-messenger communication threads, the left one minimized. Google also showed a notepad panel.

Chrome OS doesn't store data permanently on its local machine, but instead relies on central servers--in this case Google's Gmail system--to store data. That means address books are accessible from any Chrome OS machine, from any Web browser, and from higher-end mobile phones.

GLOSSARY:
Solid-State Drives (SSD) = data storage devices that use solid-state ( circuits or devices built entirely from solid materials and in which the electrons, or other charge carriers, are confined entirely within the solid material) memory.
x86 = processor that derived from architectures of the Intel 8086, for example Intel Core 2, Intel Atom and AMD Phenom.
ARM CPUs = Processors developed by ARM Limited that runs on 32-bit reduced instruction set computer (RISC), used in support of Unix-like OS; Linux, iPhone OS and Solaris.

GOOGLE WAVE NOT FOR DUMMIES?

I found this interesting article on the Google Search when I was eager to learn more about the Wave. On this particular post on the blog, owned by Wall Street Journal, where they were talking about the functionality and friendliness of Google Wave. You can click here to read about the commentary.

On this post, WSJ talked about the functionality issues that new Wavers may have to bang themselves on the wall trying to figure out how and where and what around the Google's latest darling. Despite the hooray I heard about the eye-popping Google Wave, I still heard people saying, "What is this?"

WHAT IS THIS? - Well, I have the similar reaction as like the other who are not really very well adapt to this whole new phenomenon. Fear not, I am just like the new users out there.

By the way, watch this video first to get yourself familiar with the Google Wave's features. It is not a guide for Waving like a professional but at least this video helps you to indulge on basic stuffs first. Familiar yourself now new Wavers!!

Anyway, no matter how hard it is to swirl around the Google Wave page, here is what I can said - you are not expected to master the whole thing in a night right? The same goes with Photoshop, iPhone, Microsoft Office, CSS XML. It takes a while right?

The so-called "inbox" that resembles an e-mail's inbox. Well, you must understand that Google Wave incorporates the concept of replying an e-mail, chatting in IM and editing a document - all three experiences at one.

The best thing is Google Wave comes with a whole package of application that you can hook in with.

THE BEST INVENTIONS OF 2009

Time.com revealed the Top 10 Best Inventions for the year 2009. Not your ordinary Top 10 because each one of them represents the breakthrough and gadgets that will help human int he future. Talking about green car, AIDS vaccine and electric eye - this is the future of mankind.

So just like last year's edition for Top Innovation of 2008, here I present the top for this year (not in top order or so but a relatively in the Top 10).

NISSAN LEAF

Like the green-leavy name suggests; Nissan Leaf, launched back in August this year is the first fully electric vehicle built for mass production for the global market. Nissan will make 50,000 units each year at its Oppama plant in Japan starting fall of 2010 while also assemblying 30 partnerships worldwide to develop an infrastructure of battery-recharging stations to keep the cars running on the road. Nissan Leaf can go up to 90 mph and over 100 miles on a full charge.

TELESCOPE FOR THE INVISIBLE STARS

Many objects in the huge space are so dim that it is so hard to be seen through our conventional telescope. However, Herschel Space Observatory has these invisible celestial bodies exposed. Launched in May by the European Space Agency, the telescope will scan the skies in the infrared spectrum but was placed at 930,000 miles from us, a point where gravity hangs on balance between the Earth and sun. Herschel is equipped with a mirror 11.5 ft. (3.5 m) in diameter, the largest ever built for use in space. The spacecraft itself is nearly 25 ft. (7.5 m) tall.

TELEPORTATION

So teleportation is now a possible reality in a future. But before that dreams go wild, let me assure you that the scientists at the University of Maryland's Joint Quantum Institute has successfully teleported data from one atom to another in a container a meter away. Well, human teleportation is still not there yet but this experiment can be a landmark for creating a super secure, ultra-fast computers in the future.
